Today M.A.C, the make-up choice of professionals, will be giving actor and writer Alex Jones a full make-up consultancy session for his forthcoming UK tour of I’m A Minger, a new show aimed at teenagers about the pressures of being a 14 year old girl growing up today. Alex plays main character Katie and 55 other characters in 70 minutes. He will spend three hours with senior make-up artist Pablo Rodriquez at M.A.C’s head office in Soho, London, to devise an authentic look for Katie.
I’m A Minger is a funny and moving look at the challenges of being a teenager in today’s world, all through the eyes of 14 year old Katie. We watch as Katie struggles to get to grips with ‘teendom’; school discos, detentions and social media, self image, self harm and bullying, all feature. We meet the ‘friends’ who actually make Katie’s life hell; Roger Bostock ‘the love of my life!’, Dad and Mum ‘who do try but don’t always get it right’, Lucy Cunningham from school who suffers from anorexia plus a host of other teenagers whom Katie meets online. The show also explores the idea that internet chat rooms conceal a disturbing world of anger, sadness and pain for many teenagers.
I’m A Minger opens at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry on 6 September and plays until 11 September, before touring to 23 venues including York Theatre Royal, the Egg at Theatre Royal Bath and the Mill Studio at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre, Guildford. MAC will also be supplying the make-up for the show throughout its tour “that’s a lot of lippy” says producer, Nicholas Collett.
